Yesterday’s Observer property section was entirely devoted to everything green. Barring the now all too predictable use of a picture of BedZed on the cover there was some useful stuff. What stood out for me was an article (handily unavailable on the web as far as my attempts went) on the debate between the ‘light and tight’ method of construction and ‘mass and glass’ for offering efficient solutions to new-build. It was a pretty concise summary of the two positions with Bill Dunster defending the latter position and a housing consultant called Oliver Drerup defending the so-called Super E system. There was an interesting middle view voiced by Nicholas Jones from the Building Research Establishment who claimed both systems have "big problems with heat waves" and that plenty more research was needed for the industry to crack create cool buildings during prolonged hot periods.
