Zero Champion - Sustainability from rhetoric to reality

Issues and debates at Sustainability Now

Less than a day to go until the Sustainability Now event. We’ve released an agenda for events that will take place, available on the Building site. I’m hoping for a mixture of free-form chat with more structured debates. Few things to highlight:

  • Legislation – Pooran Desai makes a strong case for decluttering green legislation in a piece I commissioned for him specifically for the event. He wants simplicity rather than rafts of bureaucracy. I think it should spark a lively debate on whether the policy directions that have been set for the industry are the right ones.
  • Existing stock – Clearly one that is very close to my heart given my recent purchase of a leaky Victorian terraced house. I promise not to turn the event into a two day free consultancy for my refurbishment project. Honest. The live seminar tomorrow at 2pm with the Energy Saving Trust will include a video report on attempts to tackle inefficient old properties then a discussion with three experts on the best ways to really scale up action in this area.
  • Embodied carbon – This issue seems to have fallen off the radar recently but influential engineer Guy Battle raises how key it is to the footprint of a building in another piece I commissioned for the show. He argues that all new buildings need to calculate the total carbon footprint of construction over the lifespan of a building.
  • Other topics – A random selection of others from the show: IT and sustainability, hosted by blogger and BE2Camp founder Martin Brown; sessions chaired by bloggers an Sustainability Now champions Su Butcher and and Mel Starrs

Looks interesting, I registered and I’m curious how it will all work but unfortunately I’ll be working in Portugal. Presumably there will be some presentations or blogs to view after the event.

Hi Nick. That’s a shame you’ll miss it. Can’t you get web access in Portugal? We will be running content after the event highlighting what’s on at the event.
